It can be difficult for students to remember when to use the long vowel of a letter. To help, try to teach them to say, “When two vowels go walking, the first one does the talking.” Meaning when you see two vowels in a word, the first one says its name. For example, kite is pronounced with the long i sound and the e is silent.
