Here are some tips for keeping kids safe while on their electronics this holiday session:
- Have kids treat other online people with respect
- Make sure they think before posting: Think, “Would I still post this if my parents could see it?”
- Tell them not to share photos or texts from others that put a person down
- Have kids apologize if they bullied or hurt someone’s feeling online
- Tell them that talking to people online that they don’t know is the same as talking to strangers in real life
- Never let them post their real name or address, even city.
- Assume everything posted is public
- Ask kids to report bullying; this site can help www.thatsnotcool.com
- Set electronics times, days, and situations. For example, iPads from 1-4pm only, or no electronics at the dinner table
- Check on your children’s apps and phones
- State consequences for violating rules
