You can start teaching your children as young as a four about the value of money. When they are that young, keep it simple. Start out with giving coins for chores. Let them put it in a piggy bank and save up to buy toys or snacks. By the time the kids are in elementary school, they can have their own bank account, even if it’s one you set up at home. In middle school, show them what savings deposit and withdrawal slips look like. Have them keep track of how much they spend in a check register. If they are driving, show them how much car insurance costs and, if possible, ask them to contribute to the bill.
